Owen Chomanika, the owner and sponsor of Chikwawa United disclosed that the team did not register for the Southern Region Football Association League, after relegation as a strategy to come back bigger and better.
Chomanika said the team would regroup next month to start preparations for a new lease of life in the lower league after recruiting new players and coach.
“After the demotion from the top league we thought that we cannot competently compete in the lower league. So what we did was to write a letter to the association excusing ourselves for this season. But next season we are coming to regroup this November,” Chomanika said.
He said the team would not have realistic chances of standing the heat without other players who moved to other Super League teams.
“After playing in the top league most of the players on whom the team was built around do not feel that they could play in the lower league. So coming down we could have been just as other teams relegated from the top flight league who are not doing well,” he said.
“So thought that by starting outside the top 10 it will time us to come back in the Super League which could affect our confidence to come back,” he said.
Among other players Chikwawa United lost Lankeni Mwale Epac United, Christopher John Banda to Silver Strikers, Mighty Be Forward Wanderers Peter Munthali.
He said they have a strategic plan to bounce back to the Super League within four years.
The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Elections Presidential aspirant ruled out that the year-long break was caused by financial problems.
Some of the teams, which became distinct after their relegation from the Super League are Sammy’s United, Gola United, Blackpool, Michiru Castles formerly Hardware Stars while Evirom United, Nchalo United, Blantyre United and Kabula United are struggling to pick up their pieces to return to the top league.
