SMEs drivers of economic development, Mutharika

His Excellency the President, Professor Peter Mutharika has described small and medium enterprises as drivers of economic development in the county.

The President made the remarks when he opened the 27th Malawi International Trade fair in Blantyre whose under theme, Achieving Regional Integration Through Trade.


Professor Mutharika said this year’s international trade fair was about supporting and showcasing Malawian products to the international community.


The President said he was therefore pleased that the fair was being patronized by a number of small and medium enterprises in the country.


The Malawi leader also appealed to financial institutions in the country to come up with innovative products for SMES for them to contribute to the country’s economic development.


Professor Mutharika encouraged local businesses to take advantage of the opportunities existing at trade fairs.


In his speech, the President said government recognized the importance of regional integration in achieving economic growth.


He therefore said this year’s theme was in line with his government’s policies on regional integration.


Professor Mutharika said government was undertaking an action plan aimed at stimulating trade with Malawi’s trading partners.


In a related development the President disclosed that Malawi would host its first investment forum from June 29.


The President said more than 300 investors worldwide will participate. Professor Mutharika urged the private sector to work hand in hand with government with a view to building the economy.


He said government would also create an enabling environment for the development of the private sector including the supply of reliable energy.
