MEC needs K400m for By-elections

Malawi Electoral Commission will need K400.3 million to run by elections slated for 23 June this year in all some of the wards that currently do not have councilors.

Some of wards in the country namely Nsikizi Ward in Mangochi, Chibanja Ward in Mzuzu, Khwawa Ward in Karonga and Zomba Central do not have councilors after the councilors who were elected during the May 2014 Tripartite elections.
This has been said by one of the Commissioners for the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Commissioner Elvey Mtafu.
Confirming the development to MBC online this morning, MEC Spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said they have so far submitted the budget to government through the ministry Finance and economic development on the same and they are yet to give us a response.
“Yes the by-elections will cost MK400.3 million and although government has not yet responded, there is high level commitment that they will fund the election,”` said Sangwani.
He said currently his body is busy drafting the electoral calendar which will be ready soon to the general public.
