MUM to date media houses on local content

The Musicians Union of Malawi - MUM is to embark on consultations with media houses to implement the 80 percent local content initiative on the country’s radio and television stations.

President of the Union, Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango disclosed this in an interview with MBC. Mhango said for this to be implemented, there is need for cooperation among stakeholders in the Music industry.


“Our plan is to meet each and every leadership in the media houses. We are planning; we have made our survey across Africa. Very shortly we will be dating media managers on the matter,” Mhango said adding that it is the wish of all Malawians that the local music enjoys a lot of airplay in the country.


He added that one of the challenges that is facing music industry is bribes by the DJs who get money from artists hence they end up playing music which are done unprofessionally.


The Musicians Union of Malawi is an arts organisation that was founded to promote the country's music industry. The music body in Malawi is responsible for both Veteran and Upcoming musicians. All types of music genres, contemporary and traditional.


MUM aims to nurture growth in the industry, cultivate and enhance professional excellence, support and encourage talent, create greater appreciation for local music, create new opportunities for local musicians; create independent musicians who are able to sustain their lives and bring awareness on the plight of local musicians and their families.
