The awards were given at a Gala Dinner marking the climax of the Press Freedom Day Cerebrations that took place in Lilongwe on Saturday evening. Suzgo Chitete won Best Human Rights Award in Electronic category; Bashir Amin won Farm Trust Radio Award; Eunice Shame won Best Ribbon Award and Aston Gondwe won Best Safety and Security Award.
Reacting to the development, MBC Director General Aubrey Sumbuleta said the awards speak volumes of the potential that the national broadcaster has in the broadcasting industry as a mother media institution.
Among other prizes to the winners during the gala were cash, laptops, TV Decoders and trophies.
Earlier on 6th May, journalists held a Freedom March from Sunbird Lilongwe through Paul Kagame Highway to Riverside Hotel where they had Annual General Meeting – AGM.
One of the key agendas of the AGM, elections were called off until further notice as there were misunderstandings between the two contesting camps due on voters’ procedure and requirement.
During the presentations of awards Speaker of National Assembly Richard Msowoya, Minister of Information, Communications and Technology Nicholas Dausi and other high profile figures were among the attendants.
World Press Freedom Day is commemorated on 3 May every year; conversely in Malawi it was celebrated on Saturday 6th May.
