Presidential Advisor on Women Affairs, Mary Clara Makungwa was speaking in Mzuzu during an interface with female civil servants in the region.

Speaking during the interface meeting Makungwa said this was part of a series of familiarisation meetings with women in various sectors, after doing so in other regions.

Makungwa said through the meetings, she has been able to learn various issues affecting women in the civil service which she said will be relayed to the Head of State for action.

“The government enacted the Gender Equality Act, in ensuring that people regardless of gender but with same qualifications should be treated equally; some departments and ministries are doing better, but some are still lagging behind.

“The other challenge is on the issue of economic empowerment through loans and small scale businesses, the President is keen to ensure that women in the civil service are economically empowered,” said Makungwa.

She further highlighted that there is a high sense of political will in the current administration to improve the welfare of female civil servants across the country.

“There are various programs being implemented by government. The administration of President Peter Mutharika is keen in improving the welfare of women and youth. And with this political will we are hopeful for more better things,” said Makungwa.

The meeting drew female civil servants from various government departments in the North represented by committees in all the six districts in the regions.
