CCAP Evangelist gets 10 years IHL for human trafficking

The Chitipa First Grade Magistrate has convicted and sentenced a CCAP Evangelist, Rueben Mwachitete to 10 years Imprisonment with Hard Labour for trafficking in persons.

Mwachitete who is based at Isongole, Ileje in Tanzania is said to have trafficked three girls in Chitipa district where he recruited them to work in restaurants in Tanzania early this month.

According to Police Public Relations Officer for Chitipa Gladwel Simwaka, the convict aged 40 recruited the three girls; one aged 17 while two others are 18 years old and took them to Tanzania after conniving with the parents.

“They agreed that the parents will be given bags of fertilizer and money after seeing the performance of their daughters. Then he left K3, 000. 00 for the children to leave their village for Chitipa boma where the children met and were taken to Tanzania,” said Simwaka.

While this arrangement was still in process, some well-wishers informed police about this, who intercepted and arrested the suspect, later parents of the three children.

“The parents of the three children answered cases of trafficking in persons and child trafficking respectively. The three pleaded guilty to the offences leveled against them but the evangelist denied the case of recruiting three young girls for purpose of exploitation in Tanzania. This prompted the state to parade seven witnesses to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt,” he said.

The Police Prosecution team led by Sub Inspector Chabwera pleaded with the court to pass a stiffer punishment to offenders as the act leaves a lot of Malawians suffering in foreign countries.

The convicts however asked for leniency saying they were not aware of the law as they were doing that out of ignorance.

But when passing judgment, First Grade Magistrate, Julius Kalambo sentenced the parents to three years imprisonment with hard labor each and the evangelist to 10 years Imprisonment with Hard Labor.
