Strong winds kill four pupils in Zomba

Four pupils have died and 16 have sustained serious injuries when walls of a classroom block at Nantchengwa Primary School in Zomba District collapsed following strong winds.

A preliminary report released by the District Council indicates that the fatal incident happened on Wednesday, 6th June; at around 7.00 am.

 

“Four died on the spot and 16 seriously injured pupils were referred to Zomba Central Hospital for medical attention,” reads part of the report, adding that 38 pupils were treated as outpatients at Ngwelero and Mayaka Health Centres.


The report, signed by District Disaster Officer Florence Harawa on behalf ofthe District Commissioner, further states that an assessment conducted by the District Civil Protection Committee indicates that the classroom block, which is located in T/A Ngwelero and was partly constructed through community contributions, was not fit for usage.


Meanwhile, the District Council is making arrangements for the funeral ceremonies of the departed pupils.
