According to an eye witness the cause of the fire is not yet known but students believe that the fire started due to a wiring fault. The hostel which accommodates about 60 people mainly form 2 students is known at the institution as Chilembwe hostel.
One of the victims who is also a house prefect of the gutted hostel Anthony Naminjingo described the fired as a tragedy as a lot of students have lost their valued personal belongings.
“I was studying together with my friends, the lights went off but we thought it is a normal ESCOM blackout. We saw smoke; we were in deep shock hence we failed to rescue anything. All our belongings are in ashes now. We are completely hopeless and we don’t know what to do,” said Naminjingo adding that together with his friends was busy preparing for exams which were expected to start at 11:00 AM.
The fire has destroyed clothes, beddings among others which belong to over 50 students who were sleeping in the gutted hostel.
Students head boy Joseph Nsamila said the condition was so dangerous and students managed to rescue few things.
“Majority has lost everything,” he said.
This is the third time since 2009 fire gutting down part of the BSS as in 2009 the fire gutted the school library while in 2015 the kitchen was gutted.
