According Salima Police spokesperson Gift Chitowe, the deceased together with another suspect stole a motorcycle SAN LG Registration Number SA 2191 property of Steven Laibu aged 52 of Nyanje Village T/A Kuluunda in Salima district.
“As usual, on the night of June 27, the complainant parked the motor cycle on the seating room of his house, before he went to bed and had the doors of his house properly locked. At midnight he woke up to answer to the call of nature, only to find that the front door of his house was wide open, and the motorcycle was not at the place where it was parked. It's when he realized that unknown people have gone away with it,” explained Chitowe.
He further said with the help of members of the community members and Lifuwu police personnel they managed to follow tyre prints of the motorcycle and after driving for many kilometers the complainant and police officers as well as wishers could spot the motorcycle at a distance.
“When the suspects saw the motor vehicle lights at a distance, they realized that they were being followed up hence they decided to leave the earth road into the bush,” he said.
Chitowe said police officers ordered the suspects to stop by firing in the air but they could not comply with the orders, but later on the bullet accidentally landed in the head of one of the suspects who died upon arrival at Salima District Hospital before receiving treatment, while the other suspect managed to escape running on foot after he abandoned the motorcycle.
