Smart Likhaya Mbewe wrote and produced drama series; Pamajiga and Sewero La Sabata Ino between 1964 and 1993. And due to public demand, he was also recalled in 1999 up to 2010.

MBC board Chairperson, Reverend Billy Gama who led the team, said that as a family MBC decided to visit the ailing Kapalepale as a token of appreciation to unequaled role he played in popularising radio drama not only on the public broadcaster, but also far beyond.

“Smart Likhaya Mbewe is a true definition of patriotism, hardworking and integrity. He is a talent that was well invested for the general good of this country,” explained Gama.

Speaking earlier during the visit MBC’s Director General Aubrey Sumbuleta indicated that as a Family, MBC believes in being with their beloved ones in times of need such as the current situation in which Mbewe is due to his long term sickness.

“When we learn that the icon is sick, we felt of coming to cheer him and show him that as MBC we care and still appreciate what he did to the Corporation and the nation at large.

Mbewe was short of words, saying MBC’s gesture was a manifestation of his belief that he remained part of the public broadcaster’s family even years after retirement.

He thanked the Corporation’s leadership for remembering him and felt that was a great manifestation of God’s love which according to him is the benchmark for coexistence.

MBC entourage took to Likhaya’s home various household utility stuffs and cash to help the aged star in his day to day survival.

The 82 year old has been suffering from stroke since 2004 and is currently residing at his home village of Mulia, Group village Headman Mwawihe in Traditional Authority (T.A.) Juma in Mulanje.
