The press statement released by the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi says it is an offence according to Section 72 of the Nurses and Midwives Act, 1995 (No. 16 of 1995) to employ unregistered or unlicensed nurses and midwives in Malawi.
“Therefore ensure that all your Nurses and Midwives under your employment are dully registered and their licenses are renewed before 30th June each year in accordance with Section 24 and Section 30 of the same act,” reads the statement in part.
The statement further states that failure to adhere to the requirement will attract a serious penalty and closure of the facility.
“You are obliged to cross check with Registrar for verification of the status of any Nurse or Midwife in your employment and before offering any employment of them,” adds the press release.
Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi exists to regulate nursing and midwifery education, training and practice in order to protect the public. It was established in 1966 under an Act of Parliament, Laws of Malawi, and Cap 36:02 as a nonprofit making statutory organization.
