This year has seen the country`s yields of the staple crop dwindling from 3.8 million metric tons to 2.8 million metric tones due to the heavy rains that disturbed the maize growing season in January.
Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water development Dr Allan Chiyembekeza made the remarks when he was asked on the preparedness of government over the looming hunger.
Chiyembekeza, who is also chairperson of the inter-ministerial committee on hunger recently appointed by President Peter Mutharika said the country has enough maize but the only problem might be accessibility of the grain.
"Yes we have less maize this year as compared to last year, but what we have currently is enough but maybe the only problem might be accessibility of the maize in the country," said Chiyembekeza.
He said as government is making sure that Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) has maize in its entire depot and that the current K80 per kilogram price is sustained for betterment of Malawians.
Chiyembekeza also said the Farm input subsidy Program (FISP) has brought tremendous results despite some quarters calling for its abolishment.
"To those with suggestion on how FISP can be improved please bring them forward as my office is open on such issues but honestly we all know what this program has brought to this country so we cannot abolish it," added Chiyembekeza.
He said government was currently putting up serous irrigation measures to bridge the food gap that is currently there.
