Media crucial in advocating children rights

The Media in the country have been challenged have been urged to promote laws that aim at protecting children’s rights in the country.

NGO Commission for Child Rights National Chairperson Desmond Mhango was speaking in Mzuzu during a media workshop on the role of the media in promoting child rights.


Mhango however expressed worry over the conduct of some sectors which are still fueling child abuses in the country.


“We are doing a lot in promoting children’s rights in the however more needs to be if the efforts are to bear fruits.” Said Mhango.


Asked on what needs to be done in making sure the challenges are fully addressed Mhango was quick to point out the need for collaboration amongst the various players in child protection.


“We need to work together as a team and address these challenges further” calling for more financial resources from both government and the donor community.


Save the Children Advocacy and Communications Specialist Lawrent Kumchenga says the passing of the various pieces of legislations including the 2017 National Children Commission is a milestone achievement in the protection of children’s rights.


“The passing of the 2017, National Children Commission-NCC are some of the visible indicators of the country’s commitment in as far as addressing child abuses is concerned.” Said Kumchenga.


The training was made possible with financial assistance from NORAD of Norway.
