The NPC, which did not disclose Chirwa's age or cause of his death, paid glowing tribute to him in a newspaper announcement that his work “remains respected across the African continent and beyond.”

Chirwa, a  researcher, academician and economics professor at Chancellor College, served as the first chairperson for the National Planning Commission (NPC) board but recused himself due to pressing personal commitments, the NPC said.

The NPC, whose current director general is noted economist Thomas Munthali, said though Chirwa remained engaged and continued to make available his advice and support for the development of the NPC, his “untimely death is a great loss to the Commission and country.”

Chirwa is expected to be interred at his home village of Mzoza, TA Kafukiza in Nkhotakota on Wednesday.
