The initiative which is dubbed BEQUIP aims at promoting teachers to move away from conventional style of teaching and learning to a more engaging, learner- centered approach.
Speaking during a certificate presentation ceremony for teacher trainers in Nathenje, Lilongwe, Programs officer for EEDF Lekeleni Mbewe said the initiative which started in 2016 has contributed to capacity building and teacher training which has made satisfactory progress in improving quality of work since its launch.
“The aim of the training was to improve proficiency in active teaching and learning. The participants went through five series of training. The response from the trainees has been good that we have managed to graduate 41 teachers and 18 Trainer of Trainers. Our goal is to have teachers that have various forms of expertise in delivering to the learners,” said Mbewe.
District Education Manager for Lilongwe East Rural Anderson Ntambalika described the project as the beginning of a long journey towards improving education in Malawi saying it is high time that the academia challenge the notion of the all-knowledgeable teacher and let learners contribute to their own learning.
“This is a very good program and it is producing good results in terms of learner contribution and absenteeism among students. This is a very commendable contribution to both the teachers and the learners,” explained Ntambalika.
Emma Kasinga, one of the BEQUIP trainees hails the project saying it liberates the mind and improves concentration in the teaching and learning process.
“These skills are very important. The involvement of active learning methods helps a child have a lot of information and potential and as a teacher; one has to cultivate and nurture the learner and bring out the best in all aspects of learning,” remarked Kasinga.
The project is being implemented in Chikwawa, Mzimba and Lilongwe districts and is funded by EDUKAS foundation of the Netherlands but implemented by Education Expertise Development foundation.
