Angry mob burn suspected thief to death

Some angry villagers in Ntcheu on Sunday descended on a suspected criminal whom they lynched and burnt to death for suspecting him of breaking into a shop and stealing money amounting to K175,000 at Chitakale Trading centre, Police have confirmed.

Ntcheu Police Public Relations Officer Sub Inspector Hastings Chigalu confirmed the death of the suspect identified as Kondwani Litete aged 25.


Chagalu in an interview on Sunday said the deceased in the company of of his friends went to Chitale Trading Centre at Senzani in the district where they broke into a 52 year- old man's shop and stole the K175,000.


"At around 1 AM people around the shop were, however, surprised to see the light inside the shop and decided to follow it up and when they realised it was the robbers that were inside, they shouted for help. This alerted the suspected robbers who started to run away for their lives," explained Chigalu.


According to Chigalu, however, the deceased ended up into the hands of people who were also running to the scene while all his accomplices fled the scene.


Chigalu said the irate mob then set the deceased ablaze on the spot.


"The postmorm results done at Manjawira Health Centre revealed that the death was due to severe burns," said Chigalu.


The deceased hailed from Kanyemba Village Sub Traditional Authority Tsikulamowa in Ntcheu.


Meanwhile, Police have warned members of the public against executing suspected criminals, saying taking the law into their own hands will result in such people facing the long arm of the law.
