According to Chikwawa Police publicist Foster Benjamin, the court heard that the 'witch doctor' defiled the standard seven girl on the night of 17 September 2018 at Tombondela in the area of Senior Chief Chapananga in the district.
Benjamin said State prosecutor Sergent Danford Otala told the court that Champhanda convinced the girl that he would offer her charms to excel in class.
"Having won the trust of the girl, the accused took the victim into a bush some five kilometres away, claiming he wanted to dig some herbs," explained Benjamin.
He added to say in the bush, the accused stripped himself naked and forced himself onto the girl, threatening that he would bewitch her and kill her if she dared disclose the issue to anyone back home.
The court learnt that, however, on her return from the bush, the girl revealed about everything and was immediately taken to Kakoma Health Centre where she was proven to have been sexually assaulted.
The following day members of the community apprehended the suspect at Namacha Village after he had fled from Tombondela Village.
During the trial, the suspect admitted to have defiled the girl claiming he was not aware that the girl was under aged.
The state, however, pleaded with the court to hand Champhanda a stiff sentence, arguing that children need to be protected from individuals of the accused calibre.
First grade magistrate Gladstone Chirundu, while concurring with the state, observed that what Champhanda had done was tantamount to jeopardising the future of the girl child hence deserved a harsh sentence so as to be isolated from the society.
Chirundu then slapped the convict with a ten-year prison sentence to deter would be offenders.
Champhanda comes from Saopa village in Chief Ngabu in Chikwawa district.
