Speaking when he officially opened the magnificent 8 room Aida Chilembwe Community Technical College at Providence Industrial Mission - PIM in Chiradzulu, President Mutharika said it remained his wish to empower young men and women who will contribute to the economy of this country through skills development.
“In realization of the dream of industrialization that John Chilembwe had over 100 years ago, it remains my wish to attain financial independence for the youth and women. Aida Chilembwe used to teach other women skills in design and tailoring and this technical college will fulfill her long time dream,” said Professor Mutharika.
Professor Mutharika said the technical community colleges supplement other developmental initiatives including MEDEF, N’tukula Pakhomo and the Social Cash Transfer that the DPP government has put in place to empower the youth and women.
“These technical colleges empower young men and women to create their own industries and businesses and offer job opportunities to the people that surround them. We are fixing the economy and we can only do that with skilled labour force and these skills will be developed right here,” explained President Mutharika.

He added that the community colleges aim at providing a chance to young people who are not able to make it to universities to attain skills and contribute to the development of the country.
Dr Terrennce Griffiths, representing Providence Industrial Mission – PIM Foreign Mission, said a man who keeps a promise should be honoured and rewarded and went ahead to give Professor Mutharika a Nelson Mandela Leadership Award.
During commemorations of John Chilembwe Day on 15th January 2017, His Excellency the President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika promised the people of Chiradzulu that a technical college will be erected in honor of Aida Chilembwe, wife to John Chilembwe.
