The gesture comes amid increasing road accidents in the area more especially at night. District Governor for the Lions Club in Mangochi, Chisomo Gunda said they will ensure that all bicycle operators have safety wear.

“One of the pillars of the Lions Club is safety. When we saw that cyclists were frequently involved in road accidents we decided to intervene by procuring and distributing the reflectors which will enhance their visibility on the road especially at night thereby reducing road accidents,” said Gunda.

Commenting on this good gesture by Lions Club was Chairperson for Motorbikes and bicycle operators in Mangochi, Michael Mkumba.

“We don’t take this assistance for granted. We are now equipped with the necessary safety gear and it is our hope that this will lead to a significant reduction in road accidents as you might be aware that to see a cyclist at night is a challenge,” said Mkumba.

Mkumba further said, the lakeshore district has over 5000 bicycle operators and this summer when there’s high traffic going to the lake, the reflectors donated by the Lions Club will go a long way in reducing road carnage.
