Dutch national commits suicide in BT

A Netherlands national committed suicide by hanging himself on Sunday night at Henry Henderson Institute (HHI) residential area in Blantyre over relationship wrangles with his girlfriend who stays in South Africa.


According to Blantyre police spokesperson Augustus Nkhwazi the deceased has been identified as a 60 year old Johan Van Houtte, who was a French and music teacher at Ndirande Hill High School.


“The deceased sent a whatsapp message to his friend, Barbara, who works at Beit Cure on Sunday around 18:00 informing her that he is committing suicide. In the message Johan gave instructions to the friend on how to get into his house and find his body,” said Nkhwazi.


Nkhwazi said upon receipt of this message Barbara informed her friends Willy and Kitty Tafatatha.


“They rushed to the house of the deceased situated close to Phoenix school. They found the house locked, and with assistance from the headmaster of Phoenix school, they broke the door to get entry,” said Nkhwazi.


“Upon entry, they found the deceased hanging on a rope which was tied to the ceiling of the house. The matter was reported to Police. The body was taken to College of Medicine mortuary,” added police publicist.


Investigations have been instituted to establish reasons for his committing suicide, however according to police it is believed that deceased had some issues with his girlfriend who is based in South Africa.
