Mutharika said this at Chibubu Primary School Ground, Nathenje in Lilongwe Msozi North Constituency during a political campaign rally he organized in the area to campaign for DPP candidate Bruno Daka ahead of the 17th October by-elections.
He said for the past 11 years while in government, DPP had brought a number of development projects in the country and it will continue doing that.
“It is the first time in the history of Malawi to have 326 trading center electrified under MAREP. Apart from that it is the DPP government that has reduced poverty rate to below 50 percent,” he added.
Mutharika said MCP failed to reduce the poverty level to below 50 percent but to 64 in its tenure.
According to Mutharika, the mission of the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) was to deal with the colonial rule and brought independence while the United Democratic Front (UDF) championed democracy in the country and that his party, (DPP is to bring development.
He said interest rates have reduced from 40-percent to 22-percent an indication that the economy was on the right track. The Malawi leader said the DPP-led government has initiated various road projects across the country.
On housing Professor Mutharika said 15-thousand houses have been constructed across the country under the Malata and Cement Subsidy Programme.
During the meeting President Mutharika urged ADMARC to open a second market in the area for farmers to sell their maize.
He then urged the Lilongwe Msozi North constituency to vote for a DPP candidate especially if they want development in their area.
