Limbe Senior Resident Magistrate court has convicted and sentenced 32-year-old Frank John to 12 years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a 10-year-old girl in Kachere township, Blantyre.

According to a police report signed by Deputy PRO Limbe Police Station Widson Nhlane, John, on August 6 this year, defiled the girl when her parents were away and was playing with her friends at home.

“The convict is married and they are neighbours in this township. He called the victim into his house when she was playing with colleagues and gave her the soaked rice and promised to give ground nuts later,” read part of the report.

It was later discovered that the convict gave the minor K100 so that she would not reveal to anyone what had happened but later the victim reported the whole incident to her parents.

Frank John was arrested on the same day and pleaded guilty when he appeared in court.

The presiding Magistrate, Her Worship Thoko Soko, said such cases are now on the rise and there was need for girls to be protected hence slapping him with a 12-year jail term to act as a deterrent to would-be offenders.

Frank John hails from Mapwesera village, Traditional Authority Chimaliro in Thyolo District.
