Women from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services, through their Southern Region Welfare group, have donated various items worth K6.8 million to Mpalankhanga Special Needs Girls Secondary School in Zomba.
The donated items include textbooks, notebooks, blankets, mosquito nets, sanitary pads and a 40-inch TV screen.
Speaking after donating, spouse to the Director General of the Department, Bernadette Kalumo, said the women decided to make their contribution after learning that the school was in dire need of essential items such as literature books.
“What we have donated today is what they said they needed, we call on others to step in and assist the children,” Kalumo said.
Head-teacher of the school, Sister Agness Njirayakonda, was left speechless by the kind gesture of the women as the needs at the school were overwhelming.
She said the school still needs to have laboratories, a fence and library, among others.
The institution has 48 deaf and dumb girls with plans to open up for boys as well.
