National Aids Commission (NAC), in collaboration with the Pharmacy and Medicine Regulatory Authority (PMRA), has dismissed rumours circulating on social media about a purported cure for HIV and Aids in Malawi.
Dr Beatrice Lydia Matanje, Chief Executive Officer for NAC, said such wrong and misleading information is hindering the fight against HIV and poses a threat to the lives of people living with the disease.
She was speaking in Lilongwe during a media briefing on the subject.
Matenje highlighted that so far, there is no cure for the disease, saying the only way one can control the virus is by taking Anti retroviral treatment.
Director General for Pharmacy and Medicine Regulatory Authority (PMRA), Mphatso Kawaye, has since warned the public that advertising and publishing false medicines has regulatory implications.
He said falsification of medicines, according to PMRA Act of 2018, attracts a penalty of K10 million and 10 years imprisonment.
