Govt wants safe and potable water for all

Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Mia, has called for concerted efforts in ensuring that people have access to safe and potable water.

She said this in Lilongwe at the official opening of the 2024 National Water Conference and Exhibition.

“The significance of water goes beyond drinking and sanitation. It anchors economic production, tourism, power generation, keeping [the] girl child in school and sustaining social and political stability,” said Mia.

The minister said this year’s theme “Leveraging Water for Peace” shows the important role of the sector in supporting the peaceful existence of communities.

“Under the visionary leadership of our President, His Excellency Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, the water and sanitation sector has been given full recognition. This started with the creation of a stand-alone Ministry. Since its creation, the Ministry has made huge steps, not only by developing and managing water resources, but bringing it to Malawians,” Mia said.

The two-day Water Conference has been organised by the Water Association of Malawi (WASAMA).
