Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Water and Sanitation Elias Chimulambe says government is committed to ending problems of water accessibility in the country’s rural areas.
Chimulambe was speaking on Friday during a tour of Msaka and Champhira solar-powered water schemes in Mzimba.
According to Chimulambe, the two schemes which are to benefit over 90,000 people in Traditional Authority Mabulabo and part of T/A Simulemba in Kasungu are at 90 percent completion rate.
He further said government is poised to construct more water schemes across the country so that members of communities do not travel long distances to access potable water.
The two water schemes are under the Malawi Resilient and Disaster Risk Management Project and are funded by the World Bank to the tune of K2 billion.
One of the community members, Salome Gausi, of Jamu Nyirenda Village hailed government for the construction of the water schemes, pointing out that they will go a long way in alleviating the water problems they are currently facing.
The contractor, Umozi Wamatipa, pledged to complete the construction of the projects by 30 May 2024.
