First Lady inaugurates solar-powered water project

The First Lady, Madam Monica Chakwera, has praised the Muslim World League for its significant contribution in providing safe drinking water to rural communities.

Speaking at Lisoka Trading Centre in Lilongwe, Madam Chakwera officially inaugurated a £150,000 ( K332 million) 30,000-litre solar-powered borehole project, constructed by the Muslim World League. The project is set to benefit 3,000 people from three senior chiefs in Lilongwe District.

The First Lady remarked that the water reservoir would transform the lives of people in the region, particularly women who previously had to walk long distances to fetch water.

Muslim World League Secretary General, Mohammad Bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, explained that six tanks have been installed, utilising two solar-powered submersible pumps to distribute water to eight kiosks around the village.

The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Mia, reassured residents that the government is committed to ensuring the availability of safe drinking water across the country.
