Leader of opposition in Parliament, Kondwani Nankhumwa, says the mandate of those in power is to find solutions to the economic challenges plaguing the country and that there is need to bridge the gap.
He said this in his response to the State of the Nation Address presented in the House by President Dr Lazarus Chakwera on Friday.
Nankhumwa pointed out that the Malawi economy remains is still in a poor state, citing inflation and slow economic growth as clear indicators.
He says Malawians are experiencing pain due to these challenges and there is need to address the challenges with urgency.
Commenting on the issue of sugar, he said pricing and rationing of the commodity is impacting its availability on the market.
The Leader of Opposition said it is not feasible for the country to fail to provide such an important commodity to Malawians while Malawi sugar is exported to other countries.
He urged govt to address the issue by providing subsidies and incentives to sugar producers to increase production.
Nankhumwa then commended government for securing IMF funds and implementing other firm policies and making bold decisions.
He said this will help mitigate domestic borrowing, which he added has soared to unsustainable levels
On AIP, Nankhumwa said there are significant ‘man-made and avoidable’ challenges in the programme, citing corruption and insider dealings among others.
