The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services says agriculture experts and authorities are best placed to provide guidance on crops that farmers can grow to avert possible food shortages.
This comes in the wake of the recent dry spell that affected some districts in the Southern and Central regions.
Speaking to MBC, the Director of the Department, Lucy Ntilatila emphasized that agricultural authorities should be in a position to advise farmers on crops that can survive if cultivated at this time, under the prevailing El Nino weather conditions.
According to Ntilatila, the El Nino weather is likely to end in July hence the need to move quickly in exploring alternatives such as irrigation farming.
