Balaka Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court has sentenced 59-year-old Steven Finye to 2 years imprisonment for indecently assaulting a 9-year-old girl.
Finye committed the crime on March 7, 2024 when the girl was sent to the convict’s wife to check if she was ready for funeral service.
Immediately she arrived, he started caressing the victim’s privates and she was forced to touch his.
In his submission, Police Prosecutor Boldwin Msukwa asked the court for a stiffer punishment.
In mitigation, Finye asked the court for liniency, saying he is sick and too old to stay in prison.
Passing judgement, Senior Resident Magistrate Joshua sentenced Finye to 2 years imprisonment without hard labour as a deterrent to would-be offenders.
Finye comes from Masende Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chigalu in Blantyre District.
