Stakeholders in disaster management have stressed that modern technology has a key role to play in disaster response.
African Drone and Data Academy representatives have told MBC that drones can help to trace survivors of natural disasters.
Agness Hamisi, one of the instructors at African Drone and Data Academy, said drones are accurate and urgent in locating people trapped by natural disasters.
“Drones are also effective when it comes to determining the magnitude of a disaster,” said Hamisi.
This year, floods have affected the districts of Karonga and Nkhotakota.
The flash floods in Nkhotakota have affected approximately 16,415 people, out of whom 10,529 people are staying in 11 camps in the district.
Through the use of drones, a quick assessment was made on the crops and buildings damaged as well as the type of emergency response required in the area.
The deployment of drones, experts believe, is a step in the right direction.
In March last year, Malawi was hit hard by Cyclone Freddy which killed over a thousand people and displaced many in the southern region of the country.
