Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale says development partners are excited with commercialisation of agriculture highlighting an increase in Agriculture Commercialisation Fund.
He made the remarks in Lilongwe when he toured one of the mega farms supported by Mega Farm Support Unit.
Kawale said the Agriculture Commercialisation Fund has increased from approximately $295 million last year to roughly $340 million this year. He added that development partners will continue funding the agriculture sector as the investment is paying off.
One of the farmers benefiting from Mega Farm Support Unit, Lefinos Chigamula, a co-partner to Harry Kanjuzi, hailed the Agriculture Commercialisation Programme through the mega farm initiative saying this is a game changer to the country’s development. He said through the Mega Farm Support Unit, farmers are equipped with knowledge that even if dry spells occur they can have bumper yields.
According to Kawale, the Agriculture Commercialisation Programme has been allocated close to K600 billion to move farmers from smallholder to commercial farming.
