Limbe Police Station has reported a reduction in crime rate during the first quarter of 2024 compared to the previous year.
This has been attributed to the installation of Closed Circuit Television cameras (CCTVs) on the streets of Limbe.
According to Rose Nankhonya, the station’s Research and Planning Coordinator, there were a total of 316 criminal cases registered in the first three months of this year, down from 368 cases during the same period in 2023, which represents a 14% decrease.
“Cases of robbery, theft, and pickpocketing are no longer a threat as the CCTV cameras can capture activities that patrol officers may have missed. Additionally, they have proven valuable in assisting investigators with the apprehension of suspected criminals,” Nankhonya added.
She further said that the CCTVs have also contributed to a reduction in road accidents and unnecessary traffic congestion.
Currently, the law enforcers are also installing CCTV cameras in Blantyre City Centre.
More than 10 cameras have already been installed, and an official inauguration is expected to take place soon.
In Limbe, the cameras were mounted in August, 2022.
