Communities in Nsanje have applauded the Climate Smart Enhanced Public Works Program (CSEPWP) for its role in reducing deforestation in the district.
Marita William, from Group Village Mbangu, Traditional Authority Malemia, said the wages provided by CSEPWP have economically empowered communities, allowing them to earn a living and reducing the burden on forest reserves.
Speaking on Thursday during the payment of CSEPWP wages at Khuluvi Catchment, she noted that the income from the program is sufficient to feed their families, thereby easing the pressure on forest resources.
Foreman for Khuluvi Catchment, Sinosi Lyson, said the payment has arrived at a crucial time, as communities in the district are facing hunger.
Lyson said many people in the area previously relied heavily on forest products, such as charcoal burning, to make a living.
In addition to the economic benefits, Lyson added that the initiative is also aiding in soil conservation through the construction of check dams and swales in their gardens.
CSEPWP is a government initiative under the Social Support for Resilient Livelihoods Project, implemented by the National Local Government Finance Committee (NLGFC) with support from the Multi-Donor Trust Fund and the World Bank.
