Blantyre derby: Pride, pressure and points on the line
By Praise Majawa
The stage is set for the 78th edition of the Blantyre Derby, as Mighty Wanderers host their traditional city rivals, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, at Kamuzu Stadium this Saturday in a TNM Super League clash.
Separated by just one place and five points, with Bullets currently at the top of the table, this is not just about bragging rights. It is a pivotal battle in the race for the 2025 league title.
Form Guide: Red army firing, Nomads gritting
Bullets, under the guidance of Peter Mponda, are in irresistible form. They have won all six league matches, scored 20 goals and conceded just once—a league-best record. Their recent 4-0 beating of Kamuzu Barracks sent a loud and clear message; they are not just winning, they are steamrolling the competition.
Second-placed Wanderers have picked up 13 points from five games and remain unbeaten. Despite a frustrating 1-1 draw against defending champions Silver Strikers last weekend, Bob Mpinganjira’s side has shown resilience and tactical organisation.
Tactical duel: Mponda vs. Mpinganjira
Both coaches know the derby’s gravity—not just as tacticians but as legends of their respective clubs.
Mponda favors a flexible 3-4-3 formation with a fluid midfield comprising Chawanangwa Gumbo, Mike Mkwate, and Wongani Lungu. The People’s Team foward Babatunde Adepoju leads the attack and is already the league’s top scorer with five goals. Mponda emphasizes functionality over form: “Whether they operate as midfielders or defenders, what’s important is fulfilling the role.”
Mpinganjira counters with a compact 3-5-2 system. Felix Zulu and Francisco Madinga anchor the midfield while his son, Wisdom Mpinganjira—already with three goals—provides pace on the wings. Promise Kamwendo and Clement Nyondo spearhead the attack.
Players to Watch
With eight weeks of action already giving fans a glimpse of this season’s standout performers, several names emerge as potential game-changers on derby day.
For Wanderers:
The Nomads started the season by scoring six goals in their first two matches but were leaky at the back, conceding three. Since then, they’ve only let in one goal—the late equalizer against Silver Strikers. Defensive stability has come from Emmanuel Nyirenda, Stanley Sanudi and defensive midfielder Blessings Singini.
Midfielder Madinga seems to be rediscovering his form and, alongside the pacy Wisdom, will look to supply forwards Kamwendo and Nyondo.

For Bullets:
Wonderkid Chikumbutso Salima has dazzled with his dribbling, creativity and goals. Coach Mponda has made him central to the team’s play, giving him license to roam and create.
Babatunde, a former Wanderers forward, has scored five league goals and nine in derby matches since 2021. His form and history against the Nomads make him the biggest threat.
Bullets defensive resilience owes much to new signings Andrew Jovinala and Blessings Joseph, who have quickly forged a strong partnership at the back.

Coach’s View
Peter Mponda (Bullets): “The derby is unique. Form doesn’t always decide it. But I’m confident—we’ve prepared well, and the motivation takes care of itself.”
Bob Mpinganjira (Wanderers): “It’s never easy, but we have been showing character. The players understand what this means—for the badge, for the fans.”
What’s at Stake?
For Bullets: A seventh consecutive win would tighten their grip on top spot and underline their title credentials.
For Wanderers: A victory would reduce the gap to just two points and give them a huge psychological edge moving forward.
Beyond the standings, this is about Blantyre bragging rights, legacy, and pride. The city will pause, and the Malawi nation will watch how everything will unravel.
