Sports Analyst, Kim Kamawu, says the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) should be blamed if the Malawi National Football Team, Flames, lose against Senegal next week Friday in Dakar at the Diamniadio Olympic Stadium.
Earlier, Flames Coach, Patrick Mabedi, was summoned by the FAM Sub-Technical because they were unimpressed with the Flames’ squad list and its dismal performance after defeats against Burundi and Burkina Faso in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers.
On Friday, Mabedi announced a 20-man squad, which included the return of Richard Mbulu and a fresh call-up of Llyod Njeliwa.
The most dominant are four players each from Costa do Sol, Silver Strikers and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.
“This is a good squad that has old and young players. However, Mabedi has a big task. I expect a 100% effort and Malawians should find it hard to blame him if the team loses because he has bowed down to FAM’s command. I just hope we don’t concede many goals,” Kamawu said.
Ex-Flames Coach and Striker, Kinnah Phiri, said the squad is “not bad” but he tipped positivity from Flames to utilise the recent technical shake-up from Senegal after their long-serving tactician, Aliou Cisse, was sacked.
“It is an away match and that is why he has a packed midfield. They should just go and fight and I wish them all the best,” Phiri said.
Flames will face Senegal in the return leg on 15 October at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
Malawi is in Group L of the 2025 AFCON Qualifiers and they sit bottom pointless and without a win.
